So my costume this year (see the previous post) was not necessarily the most obvious one for most folks this side of the pond. Doctor Who is huge in the UK, but has more a cult following here in the US. As such I didn’t really expect most people to “get” my costume.
I couldn’t help feeling just a little deflated though when I ended up having to explain my costume to all but one person in my office! I’m a programmer! I’m surrounded by geeks! And yet no-one knew who I was? That was a disappointment.
So it was totally and utterly awesome when I went to an improv performance/costume party with my family Halloween night and within 30 seconds of walking into the theater one of the performers walks up to me and says: “Oh PLEASE tell me that you’re supposed to be David Tennant!” After answering in the affirmative this individual proceeded to literally jump up and down saying “I knew it! It’s DOCTOR FREAKING WHO!!!” I then was approached by a second individual who asked to get a picture of me because she and her friends were such big fans of the show, and moments later the first guy introduced me to his fiancĂ© who exclaimed “I don’t know who you are but I love you!” and gave me a gigantic hug.
Like I said, a cult following to be sure, but a dedicated one at that!
Thanks to everyone who complimented the costume! Totally made the weeks of digging through DI racks worth it!
